Types of Datasets

USTS data has been de-identified to protect the confidentiality of respondents. Three versions of the USTS dataset are available for request, which are described below. One version of the dataset will not require documentation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) review for approval of use of the dataset by NCTE. However, to receive datasets that include zip codes and/or write-in responses, NCTE will require some level of IRB review and submission of documentation. A request form must be submitted for each research project for which the data is being requested using the data-request form (available via link on a subsequent page).

USTS dataset 1: Dataset does not include write-in responses or zip codes.

  • Eligibility: No documentation of IRB review required.

USTS dataset 2: Dataset includes write-in responses with personally identifying information redacted, but does not include essay responses (Question 32) or zip codes.

  • Eligibility: Project has undergone expedited or full board IRB review and was approved. IRB approval letter and IRB-approved data security protocols must be submitted to NCTE as part of the request for the dataset. Projects that have been granted an IRB exemption do not qualify for dataset 3.

USTS dataset 3: Dataset includes write-in responses and essay responses (Question 32) with personally identifying information redacted and zip codes.

  • Eligibility: Project has undergone a full board IRB review and was approved. IRB approval letter and IRB-approved data security protocols must be submitted to NCTE as part of the request for the dataset. Projects that have undergone expedited review and projects that have been granted an IRB exemption do not qualify for dataset 3.

Note: The 2008-09 National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) dataset is also available for request through a separate request form. Additional details about the NTDS dataset are available in the NTDS data-request form.
